Final Submission

Revision 1 - Cover

Image
I have gotten feedback from my peers that I need better branding on my cover page.  They told me that especially the title needs to be in a more unique font and my page numbers also need to be more unique.  I also put an outline on the orange text so that the font is easier to read. After receiving this feedback, I changed those features.  My title has the first letter in the Phosphate font and the rest of the letters in the word were in the font Times New Roman.  I also changed the orange subheading to black Times New Roman and put it in a black outline with a white background.  Lastly, I put more branding to the page numbers by putting the title of my magazine and title of the article next to the page numbers for better branding.

Revision 3 - Fix Photos on both Q&A and Article

Image
I was given feedback that I should realign the photos on the Q&A and Article to take away white space and make them more linked to the text.  I aligned the photo on the Article to the right more close to the text.  On the Q&A I redid the spacing for the photos and the captions underneath them to make them look more professional.

Revision 2 - Justify Text

Image
I was also given feedback that I needed to justify the text on the Q&A and so I fixed it and arranged the text so that they were all aligned.  I was also told that I should change the font on the article and Q&A to match the rest of my magazine so I changed the font to Times New Roman.

3rd Quarter Final Submission

Image
I have made various revisions since my last quarter's submission.  I updated my cover photo to a picture of Kane Reyes.  This picture has better quality and is a better shot for a cover, as it is an action-shot and I feel that it would persuade a reader to want to open the magazine.  I also updated the text fonts and the layout of the captions on the cover to a more professionally aligned position.  On the other three pages, I changed the background layout to a solid color of white considering that it would be much more expensive to print these pages thousands of times for magazines.  My third revision was that I had added more to my title of contents making it look more realistic/professional and added another picture onto the page of Drew Warrington shooting a mid-range shot.  I feel that these pictures all support the basketball theme of the first few pages of my magazine.  I feel that I am progressing to make the intro to my magazine ...

4. How did you integrate technologies in this project? To create my magazine, I used the computer program PowerPoint to create my magazine and I used themes and fonts from PowerPoint to setup the layout of the magazine.  I also used a Canon camera to take pictures of the players so I was able to load them up on my computer and I was able to load them onto my magazine.  These features were key for me to create my magazine.

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?          My production skills have developed since I started this project because of how I learned about how to make my product appealing to customers and how to make my magazine look professional.  While working on this project I also learned new features on PowerPoint to help make my project more professional.  I also learned the importance of the steps of making magazines such as creating a Flat Plan. I have learned many things from working on this Project.

2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?      World of Sports Magazine engages with their audience by having an appealing cover that would make someone want to pick up the magazine.  Keyn Reyes is wearing a Sarasota High Basketball Jersey which has a well-known athletic program.  Because of this, someone would see the cover and want to pick up the magazine.  On the cover, there are also very hooking subheadings that would influence someone to pick up the magazine and read it.     If I were to publish the World of Sports magazine, I would distribute the magazine by selling them in concession stands, sporting events, put an advertisement in the school's newspaper, and also take them to nearby barber shops for people to read as they are waiting.  There are many places around Sarasota I would be able to sell them to customers.  I could also set up a website online so that p...

1.  How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?      My magazine is different from other sports magazines because The World of Sports is a magazine about high school athletics opposed to the many about college and professional sports.  However, I did use conventions for my magazine layout as I tried to make my cover similar to the Sports Illustrated Cover.  For example, Sports illustrated usually has a picture of a single athlete on the front and then subheadings on the side of the cover and also has the same basic title font.  I used these conventions because it makes my magazine look more professional.      World of Sports Magazine represented its social group of sports fans and athletes by giving the target audience a magazine with sport related contents.  The social group/audience for this magazine would be high school students and parents who are interested in local ...

Distribution Research 3 - ESPN

The ESPN website displays various categories and sections.  The website lists the most popular sports in the U.S. and a few other categories.  At the top of the site, there are categories that list every sport, a watch option, a list option, and a fantasy option.  Above these categories, the site offers the stats of current or recent sports games.  After clicking on the Magazine section of the website, it asks automatically if you would like to sign up for a subscription as soon as you open the page.  On this page, it well tell you what is inside the magazine but, will not show you the content in the magazine.  Some of the features on this website that are not included on the magazines are the live stats, the watch category, the listen category, or the fantasy category.  In the magazines, there are also no categories for every sport allowing you to look at information or stats.  This site also allows you to buy tickets to games on it.  Becaus...

Distribution Research 2 - Sports Illustrated

The Sports Illustrated website displays various categories and options.  The Sports Illustrated website has a category for nearly every sport giving information about each one.  Above the categories it lists all of the March Madness Scores (college basketball) both current and recently.  The site also lists videos, photos, podcasts, vault, and shop options for fans of the company.  To the left of the categories is a menu option which give even more categories for sports.  The menu selection also includes a subscription area to subscribe to the magazine.  On this website there are also many advertisements depicting that the company is making money from the site.  The digital edition of the site does allow a few features that the magazines do not include such as videos and the shop.  In the websites vault, anyone is capable of reading recent magazines online for free and can view the content of the pages by clicking the arrows pointing towards the n...

Distribution Research 1

Distribution in the magazine industry is how the reader receives the magazine.  There are various ways that magazines are distributed to the audience.  The majority of magazines have a distribution process called a subscription.  The way they get people to sign up for a subscription is by putting a card in the magazine that you would fill out and send back to the company.  After the reader sends the card back and pays for the subscription, they magazine will send the new issue of the magazine every 1 month, 2 months, or 6 months.  Another process of distribution is putting the magazine in news stands.  This is a good way for a magazine company to attract readers who are shopping or getting their hair cut and is for people who don't want to pay for a subscription but want the magazine.  The third way magazines distribute their magazines are the online editions.  These editions usually require the website visitor to signup for a free trial before it...

Target Audience Research 3 ISSU

ISSU magazine has many target audience similarities to mine.  The age range is the same for both magazines (high school students and their parents.)  This magazine did differentiate from mine because of how their magazine is focused on Football and my magazine is focused on all sports.  This would attract more high school football fans then athletes in general.  Both magazines do have similar audiences as they are both focused on the sports in the magazine's local city.  The target difference is different from mine because of how the ISSU magazine is focused more towards men (football fans) as my magazine is meant for all athletes (men and woman).  ISSU markets their magazine through the stores and dealerships that sponsor them and the internet.  ISSU accesses the internet by posting ads on social media and also internet sites.  They also sell this magazine in nearby convience stores and some gas stations.  This magazine used various persuasi...

Target Audience Research 2 / Vype

Vype Houston magazine has many target audience similarities to mine.   The age range is the same for both magazines (high school students and their parents.)   Both magazines have the same audience as both magazines are focused towards high school sports in the local city.  The target audience is similar to mine because either gender could be interested in the magazine but, their magazine is more intriguing to both genders as mine is more for male genders.  Vype magazine markets/familiarizes their products through social media, website advertisements, they sell the magazines in convenience stores, and at the restaurant Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steak Burgers.  This magazine used various persuasive techniques to attract readers.  The first thing they did was put both genders on the cover to tell people that sport information about both genders would be included in this magazine.  They also put in a caption that there would be 5a and 6a ran...

Target Audience Research 1 / Florida Football Magazine

Florida football Magazine has many similarities with their target audience to my magazine.   The age range is the same for both magazines (high school students and their parents.)  This magazine does have a wider audience because of how it is made by Herald and is focused towards Florida football opposed to local sports.  The target audience is similar to mine because either gender could be interested in the magazine but they are both more intriguing to the male audience.  The geography of my magazine and the Florida Football Magazine are different as my magazine is spread through the city opposed to throughout the state.  They familiarized their magazine by putting them in news stands and by putting ads in the Miami-Dade Herald.  This magazine used various persuasive techniques to attract readers.  On the cover, some of the captions say, "Guide to Friday Night", "2008 Reebok Florida Football Phenoms" and "Exclusive Profiles of 517 High School Te...

My Magazine's Target Audience

My magazine is mainly for high school students and their family members. This magazine is meant to be targeted at all genders because of how it includes sports articles about their friends (the athletes) and school.  My magazine is also focuses on having a local audience of anyone in Sarasota who is interested in high school sports and news. The income level of the audience of my magazine would be  medium to low.  This is because most kids in high school do not have jobs and the some that do are not making that much, as they are only part time jobs.  The education level of this magazine does not require a good education to understand/read.  This magazine is meant for people in high school and parents of high school students.  This would mean that the parents would have a higher education and the students have less than a high school degree.

Re-Photoshoot

Image
On 2/7/2018, I am going to be attending the JV and Varsity basketball games to take more pictures.  Vincent is currently injured so I am unable to take pictures of him, so I will be taking pictures of Varsity Players such as Jack Duffy and Jayden Robinson.  I am focused on getting action shots of the players, including shots of them with the ball or scoring.  I will be sitting underneath our team's basket so I can get shots of them charging towards the hoop.  The JV game is at 6 p.m. and the varsity game where Jayden will be playing is at 7:30 p.m.  I have a feeling I will take some good camera shots I can input into my magazine.

Super Bowl Commercials

Doritos vs. Mountain Dew Commercial - This Superbowl commercial used rap to attract young viewers and used the actors Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman to attract viewers from all age groups. Amazon Alexa Commercial -  This commercial shows the Amazon product "Alexa" to show the capabilities of Alexa using celebrities to attract viewers from 16+ years old. Tide Commercial -  This advertisement used parodies of famous Superbowl topic ad commercials to attract viewers with a more comedic affect.  This commercial also featured David Harbour from the show Stranger  Things to attract viewers from that show's audience.

Revision/Title Font

I have gotten feedback that my title font of Aerial Black is too basic.  Because of this I am going to change the font to a more unique font which is _____.  I will also make the font a color to ______ which would match better with the background picture.  Along with font and color, I will also be changing the font size.                   Before:

Revision / Picture Comparison

I will be taking more pictures of Vincent on February 7th, 2018.  I will be using a camera took capture these pictures opposed to an iPhone 7.  These pictures will be more clear as I will be taking action shots with a professional camera.

Article Background Revision

Image
I changed the background layout for the article to a white background with black lining.  This revision is important because it would be more expensive to print the article with that layout.  It also looks more professional when it has a this background as professional magazines have similar layouts.

Feedback/ Revisions

When I presented my project, my peers critiqued my presentation and gave me various helpful comments.  Based on feedback, one of the things I will be editing will be the title font on my cover. My peers also said the title was too basic so, I will change it to a more unique font.  Another thing I need to revise is my subheadings on the cover page.  I received comments from my peers that it was hard to see some of the words because of how the font was orange on an orange background.  I will also revise this font and make sure that it is easily able to be read.  For the table of  contents, I would like to revise the page and add more detail.  I would like to add detail by changing the background design and add more articles.  I'm going to change the background design because I understand that if I keep a colored background, it would cost more money to print.  I'm also gonna do the same thing with the pages of the article bec...

Social Groups

In my magazine, I represent student athletes.  I find out information about some of their problems including time management, playing multiple sports, and tough decisions.  I will also be including similar problems to these that happen to be common or relatable for student athletes.

Interview Questions

When did you start playing basketball? How often do you workout/train so that you are prepared to play in the games? Did you expect to make a spot on Varsity and why did you decide to turn it down? How much extra work (practice) do you put in aside from team practices to help you reach varsity standards? What colleges are you currently looking at to possibly attend? What is your dream college? Do you see yourself making it to the professional level? What drives you to play at the best of your abilities and train harder than others?

Schedule Interview

My interview with Vincent was scheduled to be on December 21st, and I planned to call him on his phone.  I planned to ask him questions about his basketball career and his future about sports.  I was focusing on getting information about his life opposed to one event.

Scout Locations/ Schedule Photo shoots

When I did the photo shoot, I planned the location by thinking of whenVince’s next home game would be so I could take pictures.  I decided to go to the home game against Manatee on December 18th.  When I was planning the photo shoot, I planned to take pictures of him in action and/or take good shots of him From the stands.
